Twelve Years a Slave

summary

A letter leads Henry B. Northup and Mr. Waddill to Bass, who identifies "Platt" as Solomon Northup on Edwin Epps' Bayou Bœuf plantation; Northup and the sheriff serve legal papers and rescue Solomon in the cotton field.
Epps formally surrenders him in Marksville, they pass through New Orleans and Washington where James Burch is tried for kidnapping and acquitted despite contradictory testimony, and a subsequent conspiracy charge against Solomon is withdrawn.
Solomon returns to Sandy Hill, reunites with his wife Anne and children, and the text appends official memorials, affidavits and the governor’s commission documenting his recovery.
