The Second Jungle Book

summary

A collection of fables, poems and short tales explores the Jungle’s ancient Law, the origin of Fear and Man’s lethal arts, and how ecological stress (drought) enforces truce and collective behaviour. Central is Mowgli—wolf‑reared—whose exploits (Shere Khan, the King’s ankus, the “letting in the Jungle” and his return toward men) dramatize the clash between human craft and wild law. Interwoven human episodes (notably Purun Bhagat’s renunciation and miracle) and lyric pieces echo themes of law, sacrifice, and the fraught boundary between civilisation and wilderness.
