Porcupine Poaching in Israel

Israeli police and Nature Authority inspectors arrested four men in the Galilee who were caught poaching porcupines - a protected species. The suspects had hunting equipment and porcupine meat, but a live young porcupine was examined and released unharmed. Poached porcupine meat sells for 450 shekels on the black market, driven partly by unfounded folk beliefs about its medicinal properties.
